Motorcycle riders will get to see two area counties, learn preparations for bad weather and have a chance to win prizes when they participate in the American Red Cross Cannonball Trail Chapter annual “Ride For the Red” in September.

The ride is part of National Preparedness Month. Participants get to ride and learn preparedness tips at each of five stops along the way while making donations to the Cannonball Chapter.

Riders will gather at 9 a.m. on Saturday, Sept. 20 at Hanston State Bank, 217 Main in Lewis for registration. The ride begins at 10 a.m. and travels through Edwards and Stafford Counties to stops in Belpre, Macksville, St. John, Seward and Stafford. At each stop riders collect a playing card and get instructions from Red Cross volunteers for creating a family disaster plan, said Donna Meier Pfeifer, executive director for the Cannonball Chapter. The disaster program has four steps: get a kit; make a plan; be informed; get involved.

The ride ends at 1 p.m. at the American Legion on 205 S. Main in Stafford. Riders will compare their hands to determine winners. Each rider will have $10 chances to win one of three prizes: $500 for the best hand, $200 for the second best hand and $50 for lowest hand.

Riders and non-participants also have a chance to win a $1,400 Tank 2007 Urban 150cc Sporty Scooter that gets 60 to 65 mpg and has a top speed of 68 mph.

For tickets and scooter display location contact the Red Cross in Pratt at 672-3651.

Anyone can enter the scooter competition, they do not need to ride or be present to win.

Money from the ride stays in the Cannonball Trail Chapter counties of Pratt, Barber, Comanche, Edwards, Kiowa and Stafford.

Prize money sponsored by Siroky Oil Management, Basic Energy Services and Herrmann Farms.
