Della K. Helmke died of kidney failure Aug. 21, 2008, at Pikes Peak Hospice in Colorado Springs. She was 93 years old.
Della Sophia Wilhelmina Knop was born Dec. 28, 1914, at Preston, Pratt County, Kansas, to William and Caroline (Haas) Knop, the seventh of nine children. She graduated from Pratt High School in 1933. On Jan. 1, 1934, she married David W. Helmke at Natrona. They were married 59 years before his death in 1993.
Della was primarily a homemaker during her life, as well as an accomplished seamstress, musician and professional cake decorator. She lived with her husband and family in Kansas, Missouri and Oklahoma and moved to Colorado Springs in 1994. A lifelong Lutheran, she was a member of Immanuel Lutheran Church in Colorado Springs.
Della was preceded in death by a son, Stanley, and her eight siblings. Surviving are Sylvia Leasure (Elden) of Colorado Springs, Scott Helmke (Marjorie) of Wichita, and Judith Fitzgerald (David) of Manitou Springs, Colo.; seven grandchildren, 17 great-grandchildren and eight great-great-grandchildren.
Her remains will be interred next to those of her husband in the St. Paul cemetery at Natrona, on Sept. 13th, at 2 p.m. There will be a luncheon at the church at 12 p.m. prior to the service
In lieu of flowers the family requests memorials to Children’s Christian Concern Society (CCCS) at 1000 SW 10th Ave., Topeka, KS 66604. The CCCS sends over 12,000 children to school in 17 countries through Lutheran missions. It was dear to Della’s heart because her son Stan spent time in Guatemala where the CCCS began.
There will also be a memorial service at Medalion care facility at 1719 E. Bijou St. in Colorado Springs on Saturday, Sept. 20 at 10 a.m.
