A challenging physical comedy written in rhyming couplets, “The Learned Ladies” is a modern adaptation of Moliere’s “Les Femmes Savants” translated and adapted by Freyda Thomas. Thomas captures Moliere’s social satire while placing the emphasis on the dangers of pretension.  Clitandre and Henrietta are two young lovers planning to marry who are nearly foiled when Philamente, Henriette’s mother, makes alternate wedding arrangements.
Philamente wants to engage her youngest daughter to Trissotin an overly charming, poetic con-man. As the plot untangles the audience will be introduced to:  Martine, an uneducated but wise and curmudgeonly servant; Chrysale, a husband who maintains the peace of the house by hiding; and, a supporting cast of servants, suitors, and friends who add to the hilarity.
