  • Miss Flint Hills Becki Ronen is Miss Kansas 2009, proof of a system that wipes out preliminary scores except the interview and puts all contestants on an a level playing field for the final performance. With no preliminary wins to her credit and a statement in the on-stage interview that she is passionate about community service, blessed to be part of an organization that has done so much for her and ready to give back a year of her life, she won the approval of the judging panel Saturday night at Pratt Community College.
She is the 20-year-old daughter of Michael and Lisa Ronen, Wichita, and a student at Kansas State University.
    Runners up were:
Miss Meadowlark Alexandra Miller, Derby, first runner up
Miss Wooded Hills Paula Prosser, Tonganoxie, second runner up
Miss Emerald City Staci Klinginsmith, Lenexa, third runner up.
Miss Augusta Lauren Werhan, Augusta, fourth runner up.
Making it into the Top 10 were Miss Leavenworth County Belinda Post, Miss Butler County Danielle Coffman, Miss Ruby Slippers Susan Yang, Miss Yellow Brick Road Shameem Kauffman, and Miss Southwest Sandi Dreitz.
The new Miss Kansas began fulfilling obligations to the Miss America Organization immediately after the crowning and was not available for comment. If the crowd was surprised by her win, the Court of Honor was not.
“We have a fabulous young woman (as Miss Kansas),”Miller said. “I have no doubt she will be a strong, strong competitor at Miss America and a strong Miss Kansas.”
The four runners-up all expressed plans to try again to win the title.
“It’s something I want,” Prosser explained. “Always try again, that’s my motto.”
