A dreadful start cost the Pratt 86ers in yesterday’s first round game at the American Legion AA?State Tournament in Sabetha.
Ottawa’s first four batters drew walks to immediately put Pratt in a hole against the unbeaten Zone 3 champions.
Ottawa went on to win 9-1 in five innings as three 86er pitchers combined to walk 12  batters and hit one.
The 86ers also struggled at the plate against All-Class 4A pitcher Jake Moore, who allowed just three hits while striking out eight in the game.
Ottawa scored four runs without getting a hit in the first inning as they took advantage of six walks, a sacrifice fly and a dropped fly ball.
Pratt got next to nothing going offensively until the top of the fourth inning as Moore retired the 86ers in order in each of the first two innings.
The 86ers did manage a leadoff single from Brock Long in the third, and they got another baserunner on a fielders choice hit, but both runners were stranded as Moore struck out two straight batters to get out of the inning.
Ottawa stretched the lead to 6-0 on a home run and two base hits in the bottom of the third.
Pratt finally got on the board in the top of the fourth.
Bryant Theis was hit by a pitch to start the frame. He moved to second on a passed ball with Skylar Angood at the plate.
Angood eventually flew out to center field, then Brad Richardson walked.
With two outs, Brock Long singled to drive in Theis for the 86ers’ only run of the night.
Ottawa added three more runs in the fifth to end the game early.
Long had two of Pratt’s three hits, while Colton Matthew also had a fifth-inning single.
