  • A former Iuka resident who taught and coached at Pleasant Ridge High School in Easton will go before a Leavenworth County judge Tuesday on three charges of having sexual relations with a student.
The judge will decide whether the case against Shannon Young, 36, Lansing, will proceed based on the evidence presented at the preliminary hearing. If convicted, Young would probably be sentenced to probation, according to Leavenworth County Attorney Todd Thompson. The likelihood of probation could be threatened, however, if she violates the terms of her bond, which prohibits contact with the student.
Young, who graduated from Skyline High School in 1992, was arrested June 29. Prosecutors allege she engaged in consensual sex with a 17-year-old male student within the time frame of Aug. 1, 2009, to June 2, 2010.
Although the victim was of the legal age of consent in Kansas, teachers are still prohibited by law from having sexual relations with students at their schools.
Young taught language arts and coached volleyball at Pleasant Ridge High School for one year. She submitted her resignation in April.
