A long non-conference trip to Tonkawa, Okla., got even longer Wednesday as the Pratt Beavers fell to the Northern Oklahoma College at Tonkawa Mavericks, 20-11 in a single nine-inning game.

Pratt took a break from the conference schedule and made the trip to play the Mavericks, but was sent packing after allowing four separate big innings behind sloppy defense. Both teams cranked out 17 hits, but Pratt’s five errors allowed a season-high 12 unearned runs to cross the plate. Tonkawa finished the game without an error.

Jarret Cofer (1-1) got the start for Pratt and took the loss after 3 and 2/3 innings of work. He allowed only two earned runs and struck out three Maverick batters. Cofer was charged with two errors and a wild pitch in the second inning, allowing four unearned runs to cross the plate.

The Beaver offense scored three runs in the top of the fourth, with John Holliday stroking a 2-RBI double to left field, making the score 4-3.

Cofer helped his defensive case in the fourth inning, throwing a wild pitch past catcher Blaine Aldrich with runners on second and third. Aldrich got the ball to Cofer for the tag-out at home plate, saving a run.

After a walk, Cofer was replaced by Richard Mais, who gave up a two-out, two-RBI double to Zach Gonzalez. Mais came back in the fifth but did not record an out after loading the bases with a single, a hit batter and a walk. Tony Gonzalez wasn’t able to minimize the damage, as another defensive lapse allowed two more runs to score. By the end of the fifth, six runs had come across with only two of them earned, making the score 13-3.

From there, both teams went back and forth, with Pratt using a four-run eighth inning to make the score 15-11, but giving up five runs in the bottom of the eighth off reliever Brad Richardson to again put the game out of reach.

Holliday paced the Beaver hitters with two doubles and four RBI. Skylar Angood added three hits and two runs. Aaron Beil went 2 for 3 with three walks, a double, four runs scored, and one RBI. Jordon Jenkins added a double, three hits, and two RBI. Hank Wellborn also added two hits and two RBI for Pratt.

The Beavers will head to Dodge City this weekend to face the Conquistadors in a four-game Jayhawk Conference series. First pitch for both the Saturday and Sunday doubleheaders will be at 1 p.m.
