Many times this season, the Pratt Community College Beavers have found themselves rallying midway through games.

They typically need about once through the order to get much going on offense, which can create deficits against solid teams.

Saturday, the Beavers instead fended off two separate rally attempts by the Dodge City Conquistadors, winning the first game 3-2 before holding on in the second for a 6-5 win.

In game one, Pratt got things going early, scoring a run in each of the first two innings as well as the fourth to lead 3-0 heading into the fifth.

Starter Aaron Beil (3-3) went five innings for the Beavers, giving up four hits while striking out six Dodge City batters. He allowed one run in the fifth inning.

Junior Mustain replaced him at the start of what would become a wild sixth inning for the Beavers. Mustain gave up a single to start, but settled down to get two quick outs. Mustain then allowed a walk and a single to right field to bring one run across the plate. That’s when the Beaver coaches decided to insert Blake McMullen with the tying run at third base.

McMullen started off with a hit batter to load the bases. Needing an out to hold onto the one-run lead, McMullen struck out pinch-hitter Allen Christenson looking to get out of the jam.

He would finish the seventh inning without allowing a hit, though Dodge was able to get two runners on with a walk and another hit batter. McMullen earned his third save of the season.

Offensively, the Beavers weren’t able to get a big inning going, but they got a solid performance from Jake Hollis, who went 3 for 3, including the RBI in the fourth inning that proved to be the difference. Skylar Angood had a solid day, going 2 for 3 with an RBI, as well as Matt Burns who had the only other RBI for the Beavers.

In the second game, both offenses struggled to get going early, with Dodge scoring the game’s first run in the bottom of the fifth inning.

In the seventh inning, Pratt finally exploded offensively, scoring six runs while batting through the order. Also aiding the Beavers was Dodge’s one error in the game, which came in the middle of the big inning.

Skylar Angood’s RBI-double scored one of the runs, while Burns’ bases-loaded triple did the most damage.

Dodge City answered in the bottom of the eighth, trailing 6-3. Hank Wellborn came into pitch and faced three batters without recording an out, giving up two singles and a walk. Pratt inserted Junior Mustain, who got a fly out and an out on an RBI fielder’s choice. He gave up a two-RBI double to Cody Voelker before getting a strikeout to end the inning with a 6-5 lead.

Mustain gave up a leadoff walk in the ninth before pitching perfectly the rest of the way for the save.

With the pair of wins, the Beavers move to 15-13 on the season and 5-9 in conference play. They will wrap up the Dodge City series with a doubleheader today at 3 p.m. The games were moved yesterday due to weather.
