Vivian Vernice Smith, 86, passed away Thursday evening, May 19, 2011, surrounded by her family at South Wind Hospice in Pratt. She was born Nov. 30, 1924, in Pratt County the daughter of Harold and Josie McFarland Adams.


Vivian Vernice Smith, 86, passed away Thursday evening, May 19, 2011, surrounded by her family at South Wind Hospice in Pratt. She was born Nov. 30, 1924, in Pratt County the daughter of Harold and Josie McFarland Adams. 

Vivian was a lifetime resident of Pratt County, graduating from Cullison High School. She was a descendant of the Williams, McFarland, Baumgartner and Adams families who settled in Pratt County as early as 1884. She married Anfred Smith on Feb. 26, 1945, in Pratt. Upon Anfred’s return from the Navy, they established a farm in southwest Pratt County where they raised their family. She spent her lifetime as a farm wife, mother, and grandmother, and great-grandmother, retiring with Anfred to Pratt in 1992.

She was a member of the EHU, Free Methodist Church in Pratt and a former member of the Wellsford Church. Vivian was an accomplished wheat weaver and enjoyed numerous other crafts. 

Vivian is survived by her husband, Anfred A. Smith. Other survivors include two daughters, Gloria (Richard) Petersen of Hendricks, Minn., and Janice (Don) Urban of Wichita; a son, Morris (Kay) Smith of Haviland; eight grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren and one expected in June; and an uncle, Ivan Adams of Pratt. 

She was preceded in death by three brothers, Tom, Morris and Larry Adams.

Visitation will be held from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday with the family present from 6 to 8 p.m. at Larrison Mortuary, 300 Country Club Road, Pratt.  Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday at the mortuary with John Havens and Harold Wilcox presiding.  Burial will be in Sunset Cemetery, Cullison.
