The Pratt USD 382 Board of Education gave its approval to $257,700 in remodeling plans at Southwest Elementary in a special meeting this morning.

Under the plans, the current office space will be converted to meeting rooms. The library will be put to new uses as well, including a new reception area. The multi-purpose room will become a new, larger library, and new carpet will be laid in the 1980s addition to the building.

The Board has been considering the remodel since approving an addition to Southwest last year. That addition is well under way and includes a new multi-purpose room and new classrooms to handle the influx of students from the closing of Haskins Elementary.

The total cost of the remodel and addition to Southwest is $1.94 million.

Superintendent Glen Davis told the Board that Simpons & Associations of Wichita estimates the remodel will be finished just as the new school year begins this fall.

The morning meeting also included authorization to republish the current school year budget to account for an unexpected increase in state aid for special education funding of $29,000. The funds will be forwarded to the South Central Kansas Special Education Co-op.

The Board also approved hiring LMS Principal Tony Helfrich, the resignations of coach Jeff Fuss and pre-school teacher Lora Fuss, the termination of PHS custodian Craig Dill, and the hiring of PHS counselor Noel Bastian and PHS custodian Rose Vratil.
