Raymond “Ray” L. McGuire, 74, died Sunday, Dec. 25, 2011, at Pratt Regional Medical Center. He was born Jan. 28, 1937, in Fowler, the son of Wayne and Nellie Biegly McGuire. He was a 1955 graduate of Fowler High School then attended Pratt Junior College for one year, where he played football.


Raymond “Ray” L. McGuire, 74, died Sunday, Dec. 25, 2011, at Pratt Regional Medical Center. He was born Jan. 28, 1937, in Fowler, the son of Wayne and Nellie Biegly McGuire. He was a 1955 graduate of Fowler High School then attended Pratt Junior College for one year, where he played football.

On July 29, 1956, he married Luane Lee Huck at Buttermilk. She survives.

Other survivors include their children and spouses, Ken and Cindy, Wichita,  Mike and Traci, Pratt, Jeff and Paula, Parker; a sister, Dorothy Kroeker, Fowler; 19 grandchildren, 29 great-grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews.

Ray worked various jobs until April 1, 1965, when he moved the family to Pratt to begin his work in law enforcement. Ray worked at the Pratt Police Department until he was elected sheriff in 1976, holding that office for 30 years, retiring in January of 2001. He was a member of the Kansas Sheriffs Association, where he had been president in 1985 and 1986.

Ray loved to hunt, fish, and play golf. He enjoyed spending time with his family, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren.

Friends may sign the register book, 9 a.m. - 8 p.m. both Tuesday and Wednesday at Larrison Mortuary, 300 Country Club Rd., Pratt. The casket will remain closed. Funeral service will be held 11 a.m., Thursday, Dec. 29 at Larrison Mortuary with the Rev. Fred Pinkerton officiating. Burial will be in Greenlawn Cemetery.
