Pratt Community College’s Cheer Team received a bid to go to the National Cheerleaders Association (NCA) College Nationals, which are held in April 2012 in Daytona Beach, Fla. The team received the bid from the NCA College Summer Camp they attended in late July.? ?

The team competed in two categories at the NCA College Summer Camp: Rally Routine and Game Day Performance. They received first place in Rally Routine and second place in Game Day Performance in the Junior College Division.

Bids were earned by the points they received for placing, instructors’ votes and team votes. Up to 10 teams can receive bids to go on to compete at the College Nationals, depending on the camp size.? ?

The team is currently doing fundraising to be able to attend the College Nationals, and receiving a bid helped discount the price of attendance.? ?

Shayla Jacob, cheer coach, said winning the rally routine, a shorter version of the routine the team will do at nationals, showed her that the staff and other teams at camp believe that PCC can be competitive with the other teams that have gone to nationals.? ?

“I have a really good group of kids this year,” she said. “They work really hard and are really motivated to go to the next level.”? ?

The NCA College Nationals will be a two day competition with preliminaries on the first day and finals on the second day. Depending on the number of teams in each division will determine the number of teams that can go on to the finals.

Divisions are determined by school size. The teams will have to do a 45 second crowd involvement cheer and a 2 minute 15 second routine to music, similar to a half-time routine.

There will be approximately 125 cheer and dance teams from different colleges represented.
