Robert Dean Barnes, age 88 of Marshall and formerly of Pratt, died Sunday, Dec. 25, 2011 at Bronson of Battle Creek Health System.


Robert Dean Barnes, age 88 of Marshall and formerly of Pratt, died Sunday, Dec. 25, 2011 at Bronson of Battle Creek Health System.

Mr. Barnes was born on Sept. 15, 1923 in Pratt to Edgar and Hazel Smith Barnes.  He had been a resident of Marshall since 2007, moving here from Olivet.  Mr. Barnes was a graduate of Pratt High School and Pratt Junior College.  He continued his education attending The New England Conservatory of Music and received his master’s degree.  During World War II, he served in the United States Army.

Bob served as a professor of Choral Music at Bethany College, Lindsborg, and then at Olivet College.  He was affiliated with Olivet College for 25 years.

Mr. Barnes had served as the choir director for the Olivet Congressional Church for many years.  He enjoyed performing in college, church and community musical productions.  He was often a featured soloist singing in his wonderful baritone voice.  Bob took great pleasure in observing the successes of his many students.  While living in Marshall he was a member of the Marshall United Methodist Church.

In 1946, he married the former Helen Trimble.  She preceded him in death in 1982.

Mr. Barnes was a loving father and took much pride in his two daughters and his grandchildren.  For many years his and his wife, Helen, enjoyed spending summers on Mackinaw Island.

He is survived by daughters, Suzanne (William) Barnes Remwolt of Charlotte, Mich., and Martha (Michael) Barnes Spiegelman of Venice, Fla.; grandchildren, Christopher, Luke and Cassie Remwolt; and great grandchildren, Kendra and Brielle Remwolt. 

He was preceded in death by a brother, Richard Barnes.

A memorial service to celebrate the gift of his life will be held at a later date.  Arrangements are by the Craig K. Kempf Funeral Home and Cremation Services, Marshall.
