Stephen Frederick Holmes, age 57, passed away Saturday, June 23, 2012 at South Wind Hospice Home in Pratt.   He was born Feb. 1, 1955, in Stafford.  Steve worked as an emergency medical technician in Pratt, before joining the Pratt Police Department at age 26.


Stephen Frederick Holmes, age 57, passed away Saturday, June 23, 2012 at South Wind Hospice Home in Pratt.   He was born Feb. 1, 1955, in Stafford.  Steve worked as an emergency medical technician in Pratt, before joining the Pratt Police Department at age 26. 

He served on the police force for a total of 29 years, first as a patrol officer, later as a detective and captain, and then as Chief of Police for six and a half years.  Steve was a lifetime member of the Kansas Peace Officers Association and once served as their president. 

He also worked with the Kansas Bureau of Investigation in crime solving efforts.  He leaves a legacy of tireless service for the citizens of Pratt and the state of Kansas.  He was dedicated to the pursuit of justice, peace, safety and security for all people. 

Steve was an active member of Sacred Heart Church of Pratt.  Steve enjoyed hunting, fishing and camping for manyyears, beginning in childhood.  He loved sports and played baseball, basketball, football and golf.  He later spent several years officiating these sports.  He always had dogs for pets and for hunting, and his favorites were Katie and Blazer.

He is preceded in death by his beloved wife, Kathleen Ann Wood, and grandparents, Fred and Geneva Sherman and Gene and Dora Holmes.

He is survived by two daughters, Jenifer Holmes and Lacey Schreck, both of Pratt; his parents, Robert and Florence Holmes of Turon; a son, Richard Gulatto of Oklahoma City, Okla.; a brother, Ronald Holmes of Turon; two sisters, Terry Holmes of Oklahoma City and Michelle Holmes-Eichman of Pratt; five grandchildren, three nieces, two nephews, two great-nieces and two great-nephews.  

There will be no visitation, casket will remain closed.  Vigil service is at 7 p.m. Wednesday, June 27 at Larrison Mortuary 300 Country Club Rd., Pratt. Mass of Christian Burial will be 10 a.m. Thursday at the mortuary with the Rev. Floyd McKinney presiding.  Burial will be in Neola Cemetery, Neola.
