Anyone who thinks that Republicans canít get along with Democrats may be surprised to find out that Republicans canít get along with Republicans either. Republican Party in-fighting lead to a failure to redraw legislative districts forcing the job to the Federal Court. And the court must have done a good job because no one seems to be happy with the outcome. Some legislators are now frantically scrambling to find residence within newly drawn so they can still represent their district.
I have long believed that politics and religion donít mix. But we have a woman in Hutchinson whose district was drawn outside her residence so she is moving into a church owned by her husband and herself. Now this appears to be the ultimate mixing politics and religion. Sheís not alone. All over Kansas moving vans are rolling, moving elected officials to new homes, or churches, in their newly drawn districts.
I canít for the life of me understand why someone would want to be an elected official so badly that they would be willing to move their residence just to stay in their district. I know that we have more than our share of politicians who claim Jesus to be one of their constituents So it makes me wonder why these modern day carpetbaggers donít just accept that maybe God didnít want them to run and that was why their district was re-drawn leaving then out.
A lot of politicians seen to believe that they are Godís representative in the legislature, not just in Topeka, but also in Washington, D.C. What they seem to forget is that God has never cast a vote for them. And yet they spend a lot of time arguing about what they think God wants and ignoring what the people who voted for them want. We send people to the legislatures across this country who debate form and not substance. They care only about their personal beliefs and forget about respecting the dignity of every human beingĖeven those on the other side of the aisle.
Maybe itís time that they stop moving around the state to keep their political positions and start actually try to make a difference rather than letting their differences prevent solutions to the problems facing the state and our country. And if the people we elected canít do this maybe we need to elect some different people who havenít moved into our districts but have lived, and worked, and worshiped there. Maybe they will be less concerned with re-election and more focused on getting the job done.
