The Greenbacks quickly realized that the height advantage they enjoyed the past four seasons was gone and they would have to rely on scrappy play and timely hitting. The 2012 volleyball season got an early start on Saturday with the Pratt Greenbacks playing in the Central Kansas League tournament at Halstead.
The league is known for being one of the most competitive in the state, generally sending at least one team to the state tournament every year.
Pratt went 4-2 on the day to secure a 3rd place finish.
Pratt got off to a quick start playing some good defensive ball beating the Lyons Lions in two sets, 25-14, 25-12.
The Greenbacks next opponent would match Pratt's tenacious attitude and with just a little more power, the Sterling Bears handed the Lady Green their first setback of the season, defeating them in three sets, 25-23, 14-25, 22-25.
The girls would come back in the third match of the day, defeating the Haven Wildcats in two sets 25-15, 25-23. The win was secured on several fine defensive plays Jenson Maydew's 13 kills.
The last game in pool play would pit the Smoky Valley Vikings again Pratt. The Vikings would not go away easily, and after the Pratt spikers beat them the first set 25-17, Smoky Valley made it interesting by defeating the Greenback ladies in the second set 20-25.
The girls finally got it together and took the next set and match 25-12 to secure second place in their pool.
The winner of pool A, Hillsboro was Pratt's next opponent. The team featuring the 2011-3A player of the year, Tena Loewen, and a talented stable to go along with her.
The Greenbacks did not back down from the challenge and led most of the set until they hit an offensive snag, losing 22-25. That was all the momentum the Trojans would need and they took the next set 17-25 to send Pratt to the 3rd place game.
The Sterling Black Bears and the Pratt Greenbacks would do battle one more time in the consolation game of the championship bracket. Once again the girls in green would take the first set (25-23), only to lose the second set (17-25).
The outcome this time though would be different. Showing a lot of grit and determination, Pratt played inspired ball taking the last set 25-18 to take 3rd place in the CKL tournament.
