  • Things went bad on the opening kickoff for Pratt and didn't improve as the game wore on. Thåe Greenbacks were trounced by a motivated Nickerson team 38-0 in the season opener.
After winning the toss and deferring to the second half, the Greenbacks kicked off and the Panthers promptly ran it back for a touchdown. Luckily, the Panthers were flagged on the play and the ball was brought back.
It was but a momentary reprieve however. Jarod Gilmore knocked down a 4th and goal attempt by the Nickersons and it appeared as though perhaps Pratt had dodged a bul let. But on the subsequent series by Pratt, QB Skylar Dean was swarmed under in the end zone for a safety and the Panthers took a 2-0 lead.
Nickerson got good field position following the ensuing free kick from Pratt and at 5:03 of the first quarter, Panther QB Ryan O'Toole scampered 15 yards to paydirt to put Nickerson up 8-0. The extra point attempt failed.
Pratt moved the ball some on the next possession, but the offense sputtered near midfield. A punt into the endzone seemed to put Nickerson in a field position hole, but with 3rd and eight to go, O'Toole hit Jalen Karber with a 78 yd. bomb. The 2 pt. conversion made it 16-0 as the curtain fell on the first quarter.
It was just the first of several big plays the Panthers would pull out of their back pocket at opportune moments.
The second quarter was scoreless, neither team being able to move the ball effectively for any kind of sustained possession.
Pratt got the 2nd half kickoff and put together arguably their best offensive possession of the night. A combination of rushes and passes from Skylar Dean moved the ball to the Panther 20. Then a series of incompletions resulted in a turnover on downs.
The rest of the third quarter was all Nickerson. On third and forever from deep in their own territory, Nickerson connected on another big touchdown play, this time to Sean Rodriguez.
Down 24-0, Pratt went 3 and out on their next possesion. Nickerson replied by pushing across another score, O'Toole to Karber again, this time for a 20 yd. TD. The failed conversion made it 30-0.
Nickerson was not done yet. After another punt from the Pratt offense, the Panthers put the icing on the cake via a 35 yd. pass to Tyler Owen off a third and long as time ran out in the 3rd quarter. 38-0 Nickerson..
Pratt had a nice drive to open the final stanza, but were thwarted when a Panther intercepted Dean's pass on the goal line.
Reserves played much of the rest of the way for both squads, neither side able to crack the end zone ane the game ended 38-0 in Nickerson's favor.
Page 2 of 2 - Pratt's next opponent will be the Haven Wildcats who come to town Seeptember 7. It will be the first varsity game on the new Zerger Field turf.
