  • The Pratt High School crosscountry team traveled to Wellington on Saturday for their second meet of the season. The 13 school meet was larger and more competitive than their opener, so the Greenbacks did not dominate as they had a week ago at Hoisington. But they performed well and came home with some hardware and good placings and times.
The varsity boys team placed 5th and were led by medalists Brendan Pribil (9th, 18:48) and Joseph Loomis (20th, 19:10.) The pair each improved their times by close to a minute from last week. "I have discovered that Brendan is a second half (of the race) runner," Pratt head coach Kathy Hitz mentioned. "He really makes up ground on quite a few people after the halfway point. I think if he can get himself in better position by the mile he will move up in even more in the placings."
The next four Frogs finished within a minute of one another: Chance Reh (21:14), Caleb Hitz (21:15), Josh Powell (21:45) and Will Fellhoelter (22:17). Zach Will rounded out the Greenback varsity with a 22:20.
The girls varsity team finished in third place, led by senior Kaylah Romine (4th, 16:02.) "Kaylah is knocking on that 16 minute barrier and will get it soon," Hitz predicted.
Also joining Romine in the top 10 was Ruth Anthony (7th, 17:03). "Ruth took 30 seconds off her time from last week," Hitz said.
The other three Greenback girls medaled as well. Nichole Moreland (15th, 18:44); Carly Reid (19th, 19:29) and Chloe Cannata (22nd, 20:10.) Moreland is still battling knee issues, but improved her time by over a minute from last week, so may be on the mend. Cannata spent the week training on a bike due to shin splints, but was able to compete. Cassidy Cronister was the other Greenback entrant, but she was pulled from the race after suffering an asthma attack.
In JV action, Cooper Crump ran 22:59 and Hayden May 24:14. Brittany Whitson ran a 20:18 in the JV girls. Zach Claussen medaled in the 2-mile freshman race with a 13:21. "I was really pleased with the latest addition to our team," Hitz enthused. "He's only had 2 weeks of practice (as contrasted with most of the team who ran all summer) and ran a 13:21. He's off to a really good start."
The next action for the Greenback harriers will be Thursday at the Chaparral Roadrunner Classic held at Lake Anthony.
