  • Whatever Pratt High School head football Coach Forrest Mazey said to the Greenbacks at halftime, it was effective.
Following a first half marked by mistakes and missed opportunities, Pratt came out fired up in the second half to take control of the game, eventually winning by a 21-6 margin over the Kingman Eagles on the road, after a first half in which both squads went scoreless.
Pratt recovered a Kingman fumble on the first series of the game, but then promptly returned the favor by tossing an interception.
The balance of the first quarter passed with the teams punting back and forth to one another.
At the beginning of the second quarter, Pratt took the ball following a short punt by the Eagles and drove it down to the shadow of the goal line.
With first and goal at the one foot line, a series of penalties marched the Frogs backwards until they eventually had to settle for a Cesar Regalado field goal attempt. Kingman blocked the 3 point try and ran the ball back deep into Pratt territory.
Luckily, the Greenback D was ready as Kingman attempted a long pass. It was intercepted by Drew Dobbs and PHS had dodged a bullet.
The Greenbacks moved the ball on their next possession mainly via the legs of senior QB Skylar Dean.
Near midfield, the drive stalled. An abortive fake punt attempt gave Kingman the ball back, but time elapsed in the first half before the Eagles had time to do much with it.
The score stood 0-0 at halftime, neither team having done much to distinguish itself in the opening stanzas.
Pratt took the opening kickoff with what seemed to be a renewed sense of purpose, driving deep into Eagle territory. A holding call brought back a Skylar Dean run that got inside the 5 yard line, and the drive ended with an interception in the end zone by Kingman. But at least the Greenbacks had shown some signs of life.
The rest of the third quarter was played on the Kingman end of the field, the Greenbacks defense and special teams continuing to give Pratt the field position advantage.
Finally, as the 3rd quarter was winding down, Pratt broke into the scoring column. Set up by a Dean to Anthony Cannata pass to the 11 yard line, Dean scored a touchdown run on the next play. On the misdirection play, Dean was sprung by a Robby Eggleston block on the edge.
An Anthony Cannata to Drake Evert pass racked up the two point conversion. 8-0 Pratt after 3 quarters.
Kingman looked to be driving on their next possession, but shot themselves in the foot with penalties. Ultimately, a Skylar Dean interception would bring an end to the Kingman threat.
Page 2 of 2 - PHS struck quickly on their next possession. A pair of Dean to Shawn Ramos passes and a long Cannata run set up Skylar Dean's second TD scamper of the night. Regalado kicked the PAT to give Pratt the 15-0 lead at the 8:53 mark of the 4th quarter.
Pratt's defense would get into the scoring act at the 5:00 mark. Jarod Gilmore scooped up a Kingman fumble and ran it in from 40 yds. out. After the failed PAT, Pratt was up 21-0.
Similar to last week, the Greenbacks gave up the shut-out late in the game. Kingman managed to push a score across with 1:07 remaining, but it was just window dressing. Pratt ran out the clock following the onside kick attempt and sealed the 21-6 win.
Of the win, Mazey said "I was not happy after the first half. We were not playing well, not executing. We played much better in the second half." Look for stats online next week. Pratt moves to 2-1 and plays Lyons at home next Friday.
