Traveling to Attica for a triangular with Cunningham, the Thunderbirds first dispatched the host Bulldogs in straight sets before besting Cunningham 2 out of 3.
Scores in the Attica series were 25-14 and 25-17. Summer Younie, Skyline volleyball coach observed, "We played pretty consistent against Attica. We served well and that took them out of their passing game."
Skyline won the opener with Cunningham 25-19 before dropping the second game 18-25.
The Lady Thunderbirds came through when it counted, capturing the deciding set 25-16 for a 2-1 victory.
"Against Cunningham we dug ourselves an early hole that we had to dig out of - we were down 2-9, we came back to win 25-19," Younie said. "The second set we just kind of shut down. Cunningham isn't a big team, but they do a great job of keeping the ball in play, they have a good hitter, but we didn't do a very good job of capitalizing on all the freeballs they sent our way."
Coach Younie felt that Alyssa Swonger played especially well last night. "She hit more aggressively than I've ever seen her," Younie explained. "She also played some great defense."
Taylor Tobin usually subs in the front row for Skyline, but with some of the servers struggling she got to test out her serving and defense skills and made some great defensive grabs allowing the T-Birds to put Cunningham away 25-16 in the 3rd set.
Summarizing the evening, Younie said, "A positive from last night was that even though our 'big' players struggled we had other players step up and shine and we still got the wins."
Another bright spot going forward is that starting libero Harley Weaver is scheduled to be cleared to practice starting Wednesday after a two-week appendix-related hiatus. Younie is anxious for the return of her defensive stalwart.
"It will be great to get her (Weaver) back -I know that she has been chomping at the bit to get back," Younie enthused. "I've really been pleased with how Shelby (Bender) and Alyssa (Swonger) have been playing defense, but Harley does such a great job controlling the ball and the tempo of the game I really am excited to get her back."
The Skyline volleyball team has a Saturday tournament at Kiowa County this weekend, starting at 9 a.m.
