  • The Pratt Community College Beavers volleyball team gave new interim coach Kelley Maydew a rousing welcome.
Despite barely being on a first name basis with one another due to limited contact time (Maydew held her first team meeting Sunday night), Coach Maydew and her charges combined to post a 3-2 victoy Monday night over Cloud County in the Beaver Dome.
The Lady Beavers and the Lady T-Birds were evenly matched, PCC winning games 1,3 and 5 and the Clouds capturing 2 and 4.
    Scores were 27-25; 19-25; 25-17; 18-25 and 15-11 in the clincher.
Game 1 was perhaps the most important of the evening as the narrow PCC victory set the tone for the rest of the evening.
The teams battled toe to toe throughout, eventually sending the proceedings into sudden death. Pratt prevailed when libero Maci Grimes crushed an ace serve to secure the 27-25 win.
Game 2 belonged to the T-Birds as they clicked in all aspects of the game to build an 18-8 lead at one point. Pratt tried to get back in it with Camera Broadnax and Elisa Seumanu having good service turns.
But it was not to be and Pratt fell 25-19 in game 2.
Game 3 was all PCC, with Paige Teel providing much of the offensive firepower for the Lady Beavers. PCC 25-17.
Games 4 and 5 went according to form: the Clouds controlling game 4 18-25, then the Beavers capturing the decider 15-11.
Coach Maydew enjoyed her debut with the Lady Beavers. Although not a stranger to PCC volleyball-she was an assistant under recently departed head coach Patrick Hall-Maydew was unfamiliar with the freshmen members of the squad.
"It was kind of hard and stressful to step into the job with a home game right off the bat," Maydew admitted, "but we all had a lot of fun."
"The girls want to play, they want to learn, they want to be successful," Maydew stressed. "And I think they accomplished all that Monday night."
Dedra Brant will also be helping Maydew as a part-time assistant.
With the win the Lady Beavers improve their season record to 5-9 (2-3 in the Jayhawk.)
Next on the agenda will be a home game with Colby on Thursday, 6:30 p.m.
