Despite playing without the services of two regulars who are out with injuries, the Skyline Lady Thunderbirds volleyball team captured both their matches at the Pretty Prairie triangular.
Against Pretty Prairie, scores were 25-17; 22-25 and 25-22. The Fairfield match went three sets as well, 23-25; 25-22; and 25-17.
With Kaitlyn Stark (starting middle and second setter) and Alyssa Swonger (one of Skyline’s best blockers) sidelined, head coach Summer Younie had to utilize some creativity in her line-up.
“We switched to a 5-1 offense around Ashley Koirth,” Younie reported. “She did a great job. She worked hard at the net, playing much bigger than 5-2 .”
Coach Younie felt that her team “struggled” at times, missing the presence of the regulars.
“We were out of rotation a lot the first set against Fairfield,” she explained. “But we eventually settled down, got our passes and finally took care of the ball.”
With Stark and Swonger on the bench, other players stepped up. For example, Janessa Davis increased the number of kills from what she usually gets.
“Also we had some great things from Taylor DeWeese and Taylor Tobin who were both used a lot in the middle last night,” Younie mentioned.
For a team to have “struggled” and still come way with two solid wins is a testament to a good team.
The T-Birds are starting to get noticed on a state-wide level as they have moved into the 2A rankings at 8 or 9 (depending on the poll.)
Skyline will get to test themselves against some larger schools this coming weekend as they play in the Great Bend tournament on Saturday.
It will be a good measuring stick for the Lady Thunderbirds to evaluate their progress so far and see where they might stack up as the post-season approaches.
Games at Great Bend will begin at 9 a.m.
