Robert Vance Detwiler was born Nov. 29, 1929, in Pratt, the son of Frank Ellsworth and Ethel L. Kilgore Detwiler.
Bob, as he was known to family and friends, joined the United States Army on June 15, 1951, and served three years in Germany. He later joined the National Guard, where he worked as a mechanic until retiring after 29 years of service.
He was united in marriage with Pat Ioerger. To this union five children, Billy Earl, Becky, LuAnn, Bobby and Angie, were born. Bob worked for Banta Construction and later became a cook at the Copper Club for Bob Patterson and was known for his good food.
On June 2, 1989, Bob married Donna Davis at Great Bend. They made their home in Pratt, where Bob was a lifetime member of VFW, where he served as commander for four years, was a life member of American Legion, Optimist club and attended the Pratt Christian Church.
On Thursday morning, Sept. 27, 2012, Bob passed away at Pratt Regional Medical Center at the age of 82.
He was preceded in death by his parents; one son, Billy Earl Detwiler; four brothers, William, Jim, Junior and Dean Detwiler; and four sisters, Dorothea, Virginia, Mable and Gwen Nola Detwiler.
He will be missed by his wife, Donna Detwiler, of the home in Pratt; son, Bobby and wife Denise, Wichita; and four daughters, Becky Meairs and husband Jim, Wichita, Lu Ann Newsum and husband Mike, Harper, Angie Troxal and husband Mike, Dallas, Texas, and Darlene Smith and husband Mark, Center, Colo.; one brother, Wendell Detwiler, Enid, Okla.; 16 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; four great-great-grandchildren; other relatives and many friends.
A funeral service was held Monday at Prairie Rose Funeral Home, Harper, with Pastor Robin Colerick officiating. Burial, with military honors by Kansas National Guard and Harper VFW, was at Harper Cemetery.
Memorials may be made to First Christian Church or to Sixth Street Park Twelve Days of Christmas, in care of The Peoples Bank, Pratt.
