  • The Skyline Lady Thunderbirds crosscountry team captured first place in the Heart of the Plains League meet held Thursday at Kinsley.
In a "meet-within-a meet", the Skyline girls bested runner-up Pretty Prairie for the league title.
Since not all HOPL schools field crosscountry teams, the league decides its crosscountry championship annually at the Kinsley Invitational.
Results are kept for the meet overall, and separate results are kept just among the HOPL schools in attendance.
It was former Skyline head coach Eric Bronson, on hand to cheer on his former charges, who was among the first to do the math in his head and realize the Lady T-Birds had edged the Lady Bulldogs for the HOPL team title.
Skyline's 1-4 runners finished with scores of 2-5 to solidify the team title.
The Lady Thunderbirds were again paced by Megan Pyles with an 18:10, good for a team score of 2.
Other team members competing included Brooke Fisher, Allison Sanders, Madison Moore and Patty Ibarra.
Of her girls winning league, Skyline head coach Lynette Freeman said, "I knew we had a strong team this year, so it was a possibility. But with a few getting hurt and getting sick, I wasn't sure. But they all came out and they did good."
Freeeman was also pleased with her lone boy varsity runner, Roman Ibarra, who captured the individual 3rd place medal in the HOPL. "Roman had a 12 second PR. For a freshman in a varsity race, we're really happy."
Freeman summed up by saying, "We had a great day yesterday, both varsity and JVs. We took 11 runners and we came home with 26 medals and a first place plaque for the girls."
It doesn't get much better than that.
