On a foggy night more conducive to Halloween than Homecoming, the Skyline Thunderbirds put a scare into the visiting and heavily favored St. John Tigers.
Scoring first and then taking the lead again as late as the 4th quarter, the T-Birds showed the Tigers that they, too, came to play.
The Tigers ultimately prevailed in the contest 34-18, but it wasn’t easy for St. John, and the game was actually closer than the final score would indicate.
Colin Little caught a 15 yard TD pass from Dustin Weber early in the 1st quarter to put Skyline up 6-0.  The PAT failed.
St. John’s Spencer Nusser answered with a 19 yard run and the 2 point conversion made it 8-6 St. John.
On a drive that ate up the balance of the first quarter, and aided by a fake punt and a penalty on Skyline, the Tigers marched the ball into T-Bird territory.  Nusser scored on a 4 yard plunge to open the 2nd quarter.
A Skyline TD on a short plunge by Dustin Weber closed the gap to 14-12 at halftime.
The third quarter was scoreless as both defenses stiffened. With about 8 minutes left in the final stanza, a Cole Patterson to Abbott 11 yard TD pass put Skyline back in front 18-14.
St. John would score 20 points in the final 8 minutes to reestablish and then extend their lead to the final 34-18 count, but the killer was a 40 yard TD run by the Tigers Schuyler Brown just a minute after Skyline had taken the lead.
“That took the wind out of our sails,” Thunderbird head coach Jon Novotny admitted. “It’s hard when you’ve fought tooth and nail and then a big play hurts you.”
Despite the disappointment of the loss, Novotny was pleased at how well his team played. “The effort and consistency was great this week,” he said. “We need to keep up this momentum for the next two games.”
