An 8th place team finish at the state crosscountry meet isn’t a bad way to close out a season. That’s exactly what the Skyline Thunderbirds girls crosscountry team did Saturday at Wamego.
The T-Birds had 184 points. Berean Academy took the 2A team title with 82.
“The girls ran well,” observed head coach Lynette Freeman. “For our first cold-weather meet, and our first hilly meet, they had good times. For as many things they had to face that were new to them, they did fantastic.”
Brooke Fisher was the Thunderbirds highest finisher (24th 16:48.) Allison Sanders was next (38th 17:33.) Megan Pyles turned in a 53rd place (18:01.)
Katelyn Kumberg (56th 18:08) and Madison Moore (77th 19:11) rounded out the T-Bird scoring.
Pushers were Patty Ibarra (79th 19:13) and Abby Giles (88th 20:08.)
Freshman Roman Ibarra also competed for Skyline as an individual in the boys 2A contest. He finished 29th at 18:08. Coach Freeman mentioned that Ibarra was the second freshman to cross the finish line, only one second behind the first freshman.
That bodes well for the future. “I think Roman will get a medal at state next year if he continues to improve as much as he has this year,” Freeman predicted. “He had his best race of the season at Wamego, taking into account all the hills.”
All in all, it was a good way for the Skyline crosscountry team to wrap up the 2012 season: the girls team taking 8th and Roman Ibarra finishing strong.
