Why do so many people hate Walmart? Is it the low prices? The wide selection of goods? Whatever the reason there are a lot of people who seem to really dislike Walmart. I have often heard that Walmart is hated because it is so big, the largest retailer in the United States. Well, so was Sears at one time but ďbigĒ is no guarantee of success. In the early 1980ís Sears was the largest retailer and in 2005 it was bought by K-Mart. Thatís one big Blue Light Special!
When Walmart first started entering small communities people hated them because they claimed Walmart would destroy small businesses across the country. While I understand that the economy of a small community is important to the life of that community, I also understand that the disposable income of families in those community† is limited and paying lower prices will stretch the dollars. Who do we want to help–businesses or people? What I have observed is that stores in a ďWalmart communityĒ adjust their prices and reduce their profits, and after all, donít some of us hate any business that make a profit? Isnít that why some people hate Walmart? Because they may a profit.
More recently I have seen people complaining that Walmart doesnít pay their employees enough, or doesnít provide the kind of benefits people deserve. Well, I donít hear much complaining about the pay at other stores or businesses. How about those small town store that some people seem to be concerned about surviving? They do always have employee benefits or high pay? Yet there are some people willing to dictate to a company how they should treat their employees, neglecting the fact that if an employee is not happy where they are working they can go somewhere else to find a job.
Another thing that really fries my cakes is the attitude that some of my friends have about people who shop at Walmart. They mock the way they dress and like to point out the ones that are overweight. There are websites devoted to how the shoppers at Walmart look. Most of this bullying comes from individuals who consider themselves compassionate liberals. They would never make statements about minorities that they do about shoppers at Walmart. These bullies feel justified simply because they donít like Walmart. Shame on them.
I will say that I do have one concern about Walmart and that is I may be getting too old to shop at a Walmart Superstore. After running in to pick up a few items I need to go home and take a nap. It just seems like the next item on my list is always on the other side of the store. I canít bring myself to use one of those power carts because Iím afraid Iíd never leave the store. So in the meantime Iíll just keep slowly walking, ignore my fellow shoppers, and to the disgust of some of my friends, Iíll keep shopping Walmartís everyday low prices.
