Back in late September, local qualifiers were held at Zerger Field in the national Punt, Pass and Kick contest.
Boys and girls of various ages compete against one another to see how far they can punt, pass and kick a football. Each player is allowed one kick off a tee, one punt and one throw, and the distances are totalled to determine the winners.
The local event attracted 54 contestants between the ages of 6 and 15.
Local winners included:
6/7 year old
Boy-CALEB PANEK Girl-MARLEIGH BATES
8/9 year old
Boy-DALTON FREUND Girl-LEXI WALKER
10/11 year old
Boy-JARRETT BATES Girl-MADISON PANEK
12/13 year old
14/15 year old
Local winners then advanced to sectionals held at Wellington. Brandon Detwiler won the Wellington sectional but did not advance further.
There were 18 sectionals representing the area that roughly corresponds to the Kansas City Chiefs market: central and eastern Kansas, western Missouri and most of Nebraska.
Page 2 of 2 - Only the top 4 finishers out of the 18 sectionals advanced to the ‘team nationals” that will be held at Arrowhead Stadium during halftime of a November Chiefs’ game. From there, the “team nationals” winner will advance to “PPK Nationals.”
Despite winning his sectional at Wellington, Detwiler finished just outside the top 4 among the 18 ‘Chiefs’ sectionals, so he did not advance to Arrowhead. The competition was very tough.
Even so, recognition is due to Detwiler not only as the winner of his local age group, but also as the only local winner from Pratt to win his sectional at Wellington.
