The Liberty Middle School 8th grade boys had a romp in their home opener, continuing their unblemished season with a 52-6 dismantling of overmatched Medicine Lodge Thursday.
The Junior Greenbacks employed a pressure defense in the first quarter that resulted in numerous turnover baskets. The Junior Indians were having difficulty getting the ball across half court, let alone getting any kind of decent look at the basket. Meanwhile, LMS was scoring virtually at will both off its offense and off of turnovers. Result: 22-0 lead at the end of the first quarter, and the outcome was for all practical purposes decided at that point.
Samson Kohman had 14 points, 12 of which came in the first quarter blitz. Noah Myers had 8 and Traik Peltier chipped in 6 to lead LMS scorers. Reserves got many minutes in the game as Liberty head coach Andy Kisner was able to find playing time for everyone on the bench, and nearly everyone scored.
Devon Stephens, Brett Barnard, Cade Perez, Abe Fernandez and Matt Huslig were on the floor for much of the game. Of their efforts, Coach Kisner said, “They have all really progressed. I look for them to be able to contribute in tougher games in the future.”
The blowout may have had an additional benefit. “With our starters rested,” Kisner observed, “we should be ready for our back to back games next Monday and Tuesday.”
