  • In their best effort of the young season, the Pratt High School boys basketball team was narrowly denied its first win, falling to Hesston 45-40.
The first quarter was evenly contested, 10-10, and PHS had balanced scoring with 4 players getting into the act: Skylar Dean, Christian Kurz, and Thomas Mayberry each tallied hoops and Josh Shumway hit a 3-ball and a free throw.
Pratt forged a 17-12 lead midway through the 2nd quarter. Hesston was not hot from the floor, and they were getting only one chance as the Frogs controlled their defensive glass. Pratt took a 22-16 lead with them into the locker room at halftime.
However, an ominous sign for Pratt was that, ironically (inexplicably?), what had been a balanced attack for Pratt became a one-man show. In the middle two quarters, Skylar Dean alone accounted for 18 of Pratt’s 20 points. It wasn’t intentional, his were the only shots that were finding the mark. Pratt still led going into the 4th period 30-26.
Pratt was even still in good shape at the midway point of the final stanza, up 33-28 following a Chase Hageman transition bucket ‘and one.’ But then the wheels came off. On back-to-back possessions, Greenback turnovers led to Hesston points. And when even Dean went cold, no one could hit for Pratt. The Swathers went on a 17-7 run over the final four minutes to salt away the win 45-40.
“We just had too many missed shots,” PHS head coach David Swank explained. “And we started letting them get to the offensive glass too much in the second half.”
“We’re still taking baby steps here in December,” he continued. “Our mission is still February.” The campaign continues Friday at Haven.
