The Pratt High School Lady Greenbacks hung with the talented Hesston Swathers for awhile, but in the end couldn’t sustain enough offense to earn a victory, falling 44-31 on Tuesday night at home.
With no players in double figures and no team quarter in double figures, PHS just simply was outscored by Hesston.
Pratt led 9-5 after one frame with a basket by Whitney Tilley, a 3-ball from Payton Hoeme, and 2 free throws each from Paige Bailey and Martha Ramos accounting for the Greenback scoring.
At the beginning of the second stanza, Pratt took their biggest lead of the night, 12-5, as the result of a trifecta from Jenson Maydew. But Pratt would only score 3 more points during most of the rest of the quarter, while Hesston, who had seemed sluggish to that point, began to get into the flow of their pressure and transition game.
The Swathers went on a 16-3 run to take control of the contest. Amy Olson had a put-back as time was running out in the half to cut the Pratt deficit to 21-17 at the break.
In addition to turning cold offensively in the 2nd quarter, the Frogs had also gotten into a bit of foul trouble. Pratt began the second half with three starters on the bench. Amy Olson, Payton Hoeme and Jenson Maydew were riding the pine as the second half commenced.
Pratt went into a zone defense at times to try to account for the foul situation, and gradually the Hesstons extended their lead. It was 33-26 Swathers going into the deciding quarter.
A 7-0 Hesston run to open the final stanza, fueled by their hot shooting and PHS turnovers, pretty well sealed the Lady Frogs’ fate. At 5:40 the score was 40-26, and that was very nearly the margin of victory for Hesston at the end, 44-31.
The loss drops the Lady Greenbacks record to 1-2 on the campaign. They will play a tough Haven squad at their place on Friday night.
