The Skyline girls beat the Fowler Goldbugs 51-34 while the boys were defeated by a lopsided 76-22.
In the girls game, Skyline initially had trouble with Fowler's pressure defense, but they soon made the adjustment and began applying pressure of their own. Janessa Davis scored 6 points for Skyline in the final minute of the first quarter to stake Skyline to a 14-10 lead.
Kaitlyn Stark potted a couple of 3s in the second frame. In the meantime, Skyline's defense held the Goldbugs scoreless for 6 minutes, and by halftime the Thunderbird lead was 28-17.
Skyline's girls took care of business in the second half, playing well on both ends of the floor and eventually came away with the 51-34 win.
The boys game seemed like a step backwards for the young Thunderbirds. After a couple of games in which improvements seemed to be underway, Skyline was never really in the ballgame Friday night.
Of course, a lot of that had to do with Fowler's size, experience and aggressiveness. Many of their points were lay-ups in transition as they seemed to continually be in the T-Birds passing lanes. Racing out to a 19-5 first quarter lead, the Gold bugs never looked back, eventually posting the 76-22 victory.Tue. the T-Birds play at Minneola.
