There isn’t much to say about the Pratt High School girls dismantling of Nickerson Tuesday night that couldn’t be deduced by simply looking at the score. A person seeing “PHS 64, Nickerson 13” would probably conclude that the game was basically a horse-whipping from start to finish, and that person would be right.
“We were kind of down after our loss to (3A #1) Hillsboro last Friday night,” PHS head coach Dean Rausch explained. “But tonight, Jenson (Maydew) came out and set the tone for us in the first quarter. She hit some buckets early which got us going, and things just kind of snowballed from there.”
Maydew had 11 of her game-high 17 points in Q1 as Pratt jumped out to a 21-2 lead. Things got only marginally better for the Nickersons as the game proceeded. The Panthers could never muster more than 4 points in any quarter against the dominant Greenback defense.
Meanwhile, the Frog Ladies were scoring in every way imaginable: from their offense both long and short range, in transition off defensive pressure, and off their own offensive glass. Stonie Flemming had the hot hand from behind the arc, canning a trio of trifectas to account for most of her 11 points. Payton Hoeme was also in double figures with 10.
In all, 9 different players broke into the scoring column for Pratt. Even with the running clock in Q4, Pratt managed to put up 11 points against the overmatched Panthers.
“We played good defense,” Coach Rausch said in summary. “Paige Bailey did a great job defensively and also had some nice assists.”
With a record that now stands at 4-4, PHS will host the Smoky Valley Lady Vikings on Friday night in another CKL match-up.
