  • The Liberty Middle School 8th grade boys shook off jitters and an inspired performance by St. Mark’s to eke out a 28-26 win on Saturday, capturing the league tournament title and completing their run to an undefeated season.
“We kept them off balance throughout the game with our 3/4 court pressure, but weren't able to convert many of those turnovers into runouts for layups.  Their 1-2-2 zone left us opportunities at the high post, which we knew would be the case coming into the game,” analyzed LMS8 coach Andy Kisner. “Samson carried us with big baskets at key times, and Noah hit a big 3 to start the 3rd quarter and we led by 8 going into the 4th.”
St. Marks was able to get to the foul line frequently in Q4, and got the game tied up with 1:17 to play. On Pratt’s possession, Bryce Stegman shook loose in the short corner, canning the winning 8 foot jumper.
“It was a dream season, with a very talented group like this one, but even more so because they are good young people with character who are willing to do things the right way.”

The 7th grade boys were heartbreakingly denied their first win of the season, falling in overtime to Kingman 44-37.  The Greenbacks came from behind to tie the game in the 4th quarter but were outscored 11-8 in the extra period.

The LMS8 girls ended their season on a positive note, beating Andale 35-31 in the third place game. The Greenback girls fought back from 7 points down in the second half to capture the victory. “It was a great game,” enthused LMS girls’ coach Pat Stivers. “The girls really worked hard and deserved the win.”
The Liberty 7th grade girls were not as fortunate. They ended their season on the short end of a 27-16 score with Andale, giving them 4th place in the league tournament.
The LMS hoops season ended with the tourney.
