  • Two Skyline Elementary School students were recognized by The Kansas Department of Health and Environment's Bureau of Waste Management for their participation in the recent Kansas Don't Spoil It! calendar contest.
Sixth grader Adison Hampton and second grader Brett Atteberry received recognition for their artwork submitted to the Kansas Don't Spoil It! calendar contest. The KDSI campaign is an awareness and education program to keep Kansas beautiful by reducing, reusing and recycling. The calendar contest was created to get Kansas kids involved. By submitting artwork, students learned about ways they can keep the environment clean and influence others to do the same.
The students were encouraged to enter the contest in their TARGET class.
"I think it's a fun creative way to bring awareness of protecting our environment," TARGET teacher Brenda Piester said about the contest.
Atteberry's "Recycle Around Kansas" drawing was the second grade runner-up. His artwork is displayed on the inside of the front cover. Atteberry said that his favorite part of entering the contest was coloring.
Hampton's art was selected as the sixth grade first place winner. Her artwork is displayed on the June page of the 2013 calendar. Hampton used pieces of newspaper for the background of her entry. She believes that it was the topic she used that made a difference in winning. Her incorporation of newspaper gave an example of how materials can be recycled.
As a contest winner, Hampton had the opportunity to go to the state capitol and meet Governor Sam Brownback.
"I met the Governor and he hugged me," Hampton said.
She had a personal picture taken with Brownback in front of the Capitol Christmas tree. All of the winners posed for a group picture with Governor Brownback and KDHE Secretary Robert Moser.
More information about the contest can be found at www.kdheks.gov/kdsi. The winning posters can be found there.
