  • Pratt city commissioners support housing proposal

  • Project calls for 48 apartments targeted to young families.

  • Pratt city commissioners gave their support for a multi-family housing project on land it currently owns at the northwest corner of Fincham and Sixth Streets, north of the Green Sports Complex and south of the former Walmart store.
    MRE Capital LLC, a Kansas City, Mo., company, proposes to build a total of 48 2- and 3-bedroom housing units, either in three 2-story or two 3-story buildings, targeted to young families, in the first phase of a project that will later include duplex and single-family dwellings.
    At Monday's meeting of the City Commission, Jacob Mooney said plans are very preliminary, but he needed a resolution of support in order to continue with development.
    City Manager Dave Howard noted that the area has not been annexed into the city and is currently zoned agricultural, but the proposal "fits the land."
    If tax credits are awarded by the Kansas Housing Resources Corporation, Mooney said they would work on details of the contract and go through the zoning and permitting process. Construction could begin in the summer.
    "I think it's a good project," Mayor Bill Hlavachick said.
    By concensus, commissioners agreed to pursue federal funding to provide east- and westbound left turning lanes at the intersection of U.S. 54 and 281, although Commissioner Gary Skaggs expressed concern about losing parking spots, which equate to customers, behind Skaggs Ace Hardware. Howard said Monday's action did not obligate the city, but turning lanes would help alleviate traffic stress.
    Skaggs agreed that, overall, it was a good idea, but wanted more information about details.
    Commissioners acknowledged a $30,000 donation from Mary Jo McCoy of California, for improvements at Lemon Park.
