A decided height advantage was enjoyed by the Skyline girls basketball team over Cunningham on Tuesday night—a fact that helped them in achieving a 45-27 win over the Wildcats in the opening round of the 54 Classic being hosted this week at the Thunderdome.
Cunningham was ice cold in the first half. With the taller Skyliners packed in a zone, Cunningham’s only chance to score was from long range, and in the first half the shots weren’t falling for the Wildcats. Shots WERE falling for Skyline, and they sprinted to a 28-5 halftime lead.
In the second half, the Wildcats switched to a man-to-man defense. That slowed up the T-Bird offense and Cunningham began to find the range from outside. Cunningham outscored Skyline 22-17 in the 2nd half, but the T-Birds had established too big a lead to overcome, and emerged victorious 45-27.
Skyline advances to the tournament semi-finals against #1 seeded Norwich.
In other first round tournament action, Norwich beat Macksville 71-45; South Barber downed Kinsley 57-51; and Pretty Prairie bested Attica 41-20.
