Recently Jim Nabors married his male partner of 38 years because he wanted to make it legal. Surprise, Jim Nabors is gay. Whoever saw that coming? Maybe he kept it a secret because he was in military–remember Gomer Pyle, U.S.M.C.? Maybe he was simply following the “Don’t ask, don’t tell” policy. Regardless, my feeling is who cares? People fall in love with people they fall in love with. In the words of Woody Allen, “the heart wants what the heart wants.” Of course he said this about falling in love with the 21 year old adopted daughter of Mia Farrow, with whom Allen was having a relationship.
We all know some married couples and wonder what they saw in each other. They fell in love and even though we don’t understand it, they felt it and it’s real to them. As the old saying goes, puppy love is real to the puppy.
Apparently it’s possible to fall in love with an imaginary friend. Just ask Manti Te’o who apparently feel in love with Lennay Kekua who never existed anywhere but in his heart. We might be able to better understand Manit’s “love” if we remember he is a football player–not that there is anything wrong with that. Chris Culliver, a player for the San Francisco 49ers made some pretty inflammatory statements about gays a couple days ago. The next day he clarified what he meant. “The derogatory comments I made yesterday,” he said, “were a reflection of the thoughts in my head, but they are not how I feel.” So apparently, there is for him no connection between his head and his feelings and this may explain why there is a problem with concussions in professional football.
People can’t help what they love and who they love. Love is a personal experience and just can’t be explained. I see no reason why some people like to eat Blood Sausage or Liver. But just because I don’t understand it doesn’t mean that shouldn’t eat it. I don’t understand how some people fall in love but they do, and some people fall in love with individuals of the opposite sex and some with people who are the same sex. But they do. And there is no way we can stop people from loving who they love. So shazam, there it is, Gomer is married to a man. And g-o-l-l-y I’m happy for him. And if you have a problem with this then I can only say, shame, shame, shame on you.
