Kathryn Elizabeth (Haney) Mayhew, 92, passed away on Feb. 2, 2013. She was born April 29, 1920, in St. John to Florence and Claire Haney. She grew up in Partridge.

Betty began playing violin as a child. A custom violin was made for her by Mr. E.R. Ayres of Nickerson. She attended the University of Kansas and played violin for the university orchestra, graduating in 1942 with a Bachelor of Arts in music. After college, Betty taught music for more than 20 years at schools in Bridgeport, Ill., Baker, Ore., Belpre, St. John, Trousdale, Hudson and Haviland in Kansas. She also directed and choreographed musical programs, including the Brigadoon at Haviland.

She married Delos G. Mayhew on Nov. 8, 1946, in Baker, Ore., and raised three sons, Barry, Jan and Evan.

Betty was preceded in death by her parents; her husband Delos; her sister, Helen White; and brothers, Tom Haney and Scott Haney.

She is survived by her brother, Barney Haney and wife Carlene of Lawrence; sons, Barry and wife Cindy, Mission Hills, Jan and wife Jody, Trousdale, and Evan and wife Mary, Wichita; and eight grandchildren, Evan, Laura, Alex, Thomas, Hannah, Aaron, Ben and Caitlin.

Betty was a devoted mother and grandmother and enjoyed her life at the Mayhew family farm for 67 years. She enjoyed playing the violin, teaching her love of music, raising tomatoes and her commitment to family and Creator was an encouragement to all who surrounded her.

She was a member of the Larned Congregation of Jehovah's Witnesses.

A memorial service will be held at 3 p.m. Feb. 9 at the Pratt Congregation of Jehovah's Witnesses, 718 S. New Street.
