Although getting closer to the 3A #5 ranked Wildcats than in their previous meeting, the Pratt High School Lady Greenbacks were once again felled by Haven at home Tuesday night, this time by a 39-31 count.
In a game that was even closer than the final score would indicate, the Frogs nipped at the Wildcats heels all ballgame, but in the end just could not get over the hump.
Things started out well for Pratt. They were able to get the ball inside to their bigs, Jenson Maydew making two foul shots and Payton Hoeme converting an entry pass. Amy Olson chipped in a free throw to account for Pratt’s first period scoring.
Meanwhile, Haven’s long range attempts were rimming out and Pratt enjoyed a short-lived lead. When Haven began to find the range, however, they found it with a vengeance. A trio of Wildcat trifectas late in the period swished Haven to a 9-5 advantage at the end of Q1.
Haven was patient on offense. The Greenbacks had the middle plugged up, but Haven moved the ball until someone would get an open look from outside. It was not unusual for a Wildcat possession to burn a minute off the clock. PHS narrowed the gap in the second stanza on a transition bucket by Olson and a pair of 3-balls from Maydew. 15-13 Haven at halftime.
Hailey Davis carried Haven after intermission, scoring all 13 of Haven’s points in the 3rd quarter. Davis led all scorers on the night with 21. Heading into the deciding frame, the Greenbacks faced a 28-23 deficit.
The Lady Frogs tried to close the gap, but Haven’s patience forced Pratt to foul. The Havens connected on 9/13 FT attempts in Q4 to hold off the Greenbacks. Paige Bailey hit 6/6 FT to pace Pratt in the closing period. The game ended with Pratt on the short end of a 39-31 count, but they had played #5 Haven a good ballgame.
The PHS girls are 10-6 now, and will take on Lyons on Friday in a homecoming tilt.
