Over the last 5 years, the Grizzlies have been state sand greens champions for three years and runner-up finalists one year.
In 2008, they were the state champions and had the 1st & 2nd place individual medalists with 5 golfers placing in the top 20 medalists. They had a four-man team score of 282 and won by 11 strokes.
In 2009, they were the runners-up losing by 12 strokes and had 5 golfers in the top 20 medalists.
In 2010, the Grizzlies found out that one of their top golfers had cancer three days prior to the state tournament so they only had 2 golfers in the top 20 medalists and ended up as the 4th place team.
The next year, KSHSAA changed some things at state for sand greens teams. They only allowed 5 golfers per team and only 10 medalists. In 2011, the Grizzlies were the state champions with a four-man score of 318 and won by 8 strokes with 3 golfers placing in the top 10 medalists. In 2012, they were the state champions shooting a four-man score of 286 and winning by 24 strokes.
Rock Hills had the 2nd, 3rd, and 4th place individual medalists with all five golfers placing in the top 10 medalists. There was a three-way tie for first place but the Grizzlies ended up with 2nd and 3rd place after the play-off.
"I believe strongly in encouraging kids to be involved in some way in athletics to keep them active, to build self-confidence, to help them set goals, to develop a routine, to build strong character, to learn how to work together as a team, to perform to the best of their ability and to instill a lifelong love for the game of golf. Winning is not everything, but learning something that you can use the rest of your life is invaluable so you can continue to enjoy being active," states Dauner.
