Emporia State freshman and former Greenback Payson Maydew qualified for the NCAA Div. II Indoor Track and Field National Championships to be held in Birmingham, AL March 8 & 9. He will be competing in the heptathlon. The heptathlon is comprised of seven events completed over two days. The events contested are the 60 meter dash, long jump, shot put, and high jump during the first day of competition. The 60 meter hurdles, pole vault, and 1000 meter run during the second day of events.
In just his second indoor heptathlon competition, Maydew obtained his national qualifying mark this past weekend at the MIAA conference championship meet in Warrensburg, MO. Maydew finished fourth in the conference. The quality of muti-event athletes in the MIAA was on display at Warrensburg. Brent Vogel from University of Central Missouri won the conference championship at his home facility and is ranked first in NCAA Div. II heading into nationals. MIAA hepatathletes have four of the top eight totals heading into nationals with Maydew holding the eighth spot.
