  • Two state participants from Skyline High School return for another season of Track and Field.
Senior Morgan Flowers and junior Brooke Fisher join 29 other athletes on the team. Four seniors, six juniors, 10 sophomores and 11 freshmen practice every day after school with coaches Summer Younie and Steve Little.
Younie coaches sprints, distance, jumps, hurdles and relays while Little coaches javelin, shot put and discus. Younie has been coaching track for 11 years and Little for 13 years.
"Most of all my expectations for track are just for kids to come out, stay busy, get stronger and faster, better their footwork and most of all, have fun," Younie said.
Flowers participated in the 100-meter dash and triple jump at State last year and Fisher ran the 3200 meter run.
"I'm really excited for track this year because I think it will be a lot of fun and it will give me a great experience to end my senior year with," Flowers said.
Younie has high expectations for both the boys' and girls' teams and the individuals. She thinks that she will have quite a few going to state if they make great improvements as the season goes on. Younie would also like to have a relay team go to state since she didn't have one go last year.
"I hope my 4x100 relay makes it to state because it is my favorite event," Flowers said.
Younie and Little want their athletes to score points, but they get just as excited when an athlete gets a personal best in the individual events, even if he/she doesn't place.
"Track is a great sport," Younie said. "Yes, the focus is on winning, but every athlete, good or not so good, can easily measure their success from meet to meet."
This is the most athletes Younie has ever had on her track and field team. Due to the moisture, the first three practices were limited to the gymnasium and the weight room. The first meet is March 28 at Kinsley.
Patty Ibarra is a senior at Skyline School.
