PCC Baseball traveled to Salina, KS yesterday, March 14th to take on Brown Mackie College in a double-header. The Beavers won both seven inning games by scores of 15-10 and 15-5 respectively.
Freshman right-hander, Colton Glover started on the mound for Pratt, going four innings, and giving up eight runs on four hits and three walks. Game one was a close game throughout as the score bounced back and forth by the two teams until the Beavers put on a late surge in the sixth and seventh innings to push themselves to a comfortable lead.
The Beavers were down 8-6 going into the sixth inning when they rallied to put up a four runs. The big hit in the inning came from sophomore shortstop Jared Lupo, who hit a two RBI single to leftfield. In the seventh, PCC put up another four spot, this time with outfielder Gaige Webster having the big hit; doubling to left center and pushing two runners across the plate.
Freshman set-up man, Creighton Hoover relieved Glover to pitch the fifth and sixth innings, giving up only one run on two hits, and one walk. Hoover picked up the win for the Beavers as the final score would be 15-10 PCC.
In Game two, Pratt would not take advantage of early opportunities, only scoring four runs going into the fifth down 4-5. However, in the fifth and sixth, the Beavers would put together some big innings. In the fifth, PCC rallied with two outs for four runs. Three of the runs came from one swing when first baseman Justin Crouch hit a three-run homerun into left-center field. The Beavers would hold Brown Mackie in the bottom of the frame and head into the sixth up 8-5.
In the top of the sixth, the Beavers broke out again, scoring seven runs by taking advantage of Brown Mackie mistakes. The Beavers recorded 4 hits, were walked four times in the inning, and reached base on error twice. Four different Beavers had RBI’s in the inning, as the Beavers went up 15-5.
Clayton Blanks started on the mound for Pratt, going three innings, giving up four runs on four hits and no walks. He was relieved by freshman right-hander Garrison Lorenz who pitched two innings of one run ball, giving up two hits and picking up the win. Freshman righty, Cam Clements replaced Lorenz in the sixth, and threw one scoreless inning as the game would end there with the run rule in effect, 15-5 PCC.
After sweeping Brown Mackie mid-week, PCC could only manage to take1 of 4 games from the visiting Garden City Broncbusters over the weekend. Pratt bolted out of the starting gate on Saturday, going up 4-0 after one inning on a Justin Crouch 3-run dinger and a BJ Dean RBI single. Things unraveled from there, however, and Pratt dropped the opener 11-7.
Page 2 of 2 - In game two, the Broncs jumped on Pratt, up 15-1 going into the bottom of the 5th. PCC outscored GCCC 10-0 over their final 3 at-bats, but still could only close the gap to 15-11, falling in game 2 as well.
Game 3 on Sunday belonged to PCC as Colton Lorance pitched another gem, holding the ’Busters to 1 run on 4 hits as the Beavers won 6-1.
In the series finale Sunday afternoon, GCCC prevailed 16-3 as Pratt squandered a couple of opportunities to get closer.
Sitting at 7-10, the Beavers are off until a Fri/Sat/Sun series against Hutchinson next weekend. Game times will be 3 p.m., 2 p.m. and 2 p.m. respectively.
