  • Lawrence passed away on March 8, 2013, at Central Washington Hospital in Wenatchee, Wash. Lawrence resided in Wenatchee, near his daughter, Theresa Sloan-Abbott and son-in-law, Michael Abbott from April 2009 until his death.
    He was born to William Robert Sloan and Martha Mae Sample Sloan on Feb. 10, 1934, in Pratt. He graduated from Russell High School. He continued his education by graduating from Emporia State Teacher's College with a Bachelor of Science in Education. Larry taught English and Social Studies at Chisholm Middle School/Junior High in Newton, was the high school librarian at Russell High School in Russell, and later in life, was the librarian at Pratt County Community College, Pratt.
    Often during the summers, Larry would take part time jobs working as a gas station attendant or tending bar. Prior to completing his education as a teacher, Larry worked in the oil fields of Kansas, Oklahoma and Colorado, a profession he returned to between his jobs as an educator. He attended and completed a Drilling Fluids Engineer training in Oklahoma and worked as a "mud engineer," ensuring the properties of the drilling fluid on oil rigs were within designated specifications.
    Larry was a 50-year member of the Masonic Fraternity of the Kilwinning Lodge #265 at Pratt, and a member of the Knights Templar. He was a Shriner, an Elks member and a member of the American Legion, serving in the National Guard during the Korean Conflict.
    The family wishes to extend a sincere thank you to East Wenatchee Assisted Living. The care provided there was wonderful. Thank you also to his friend, Ed, with whom he was able to have "power chair" adventures and some good laughs.
    Thank you to Hospice, Palliative Care and Central Washington Hospital for the caring and supportive staff there.
    Lawrence was preceded in death by his parents, William and Martha Sloan; his wife, Ruth Wilkerson Sloan in 1994; and his daughter, Jennifer Sloan Fisher in 1997, all in Pratt.
    He is survived by his first cousin, Phyllis Sample Hoffman of Pratt; and by his daughter, Theresa Sloan-Abbott of East Wenatchee, Wash. He also leaves behind grandchildren, Angela Reese and Jason Froelich, both residing in Washington state, Jackie Gardner of Pratt, David M. Gardner of Colleyville, Texas, Nathan Coon of Rochester, Minn., and Courtney Coon Ward of Phoenix, Ariz. Lawrence also had 10 great-grandchildren.
    A graveside memorial by Larrison Mortuary will be held at Greenlawn Cemetery on Saturday, March 30, at 2 p.m. A social gathering of friends and family will follow at Charlie's Pizza Taco, 105 W. 1st Street in Pratt.
