Emporia State freshman Payson Maydew earned tenth place in the heptathlon at the NCAA DII Indoor Track and Field National Championships over the weekend.
Maydews point total for the seven events eclipsed 5000 points for the second straight time, and fell just 50 points less than his total from the MIAA conference meet.
Fellow MIAA athlete Brent Vogel from the University of Central Missouri won the National Championship in record fashion.
The top three finishers in this years event all broke the previous DII record for the heptathlon.
The event was held at the Crossplex facility in Birmingham, AL. Just two years old, the venue features a 6 lane, 200 meter, hydraulically banked track and 8 lane sprint straightaway.
Maydew was a multiple state qualifier in track while at Pratt High.
