In a pair of contrasting games, the Pratt High School Lady Greenbacks were able to sweep the visiting Hays Indians in the season opening doubleheader at Green Sports Complex.
In the opener, PHS prevailed easily 10-2, while in the nightcap they had to rally from behind to pull out the walk-off win in the bottom of the 7th.
In game one, Brittnee Hill got her first win of the season in the circle for Pratt, allowing just 2 earned runs while fanning 11 and walking just 2. Head coach Mike Forshee said, “Brittney threw a good first game for us and she will continue to get stronger.”
Hayden Pixler went 2/4 with a double, scored 2 runs and had 4 RBIs. Kinzie Spurgin was also 2/4 with a run and an RBI. Hill helped her own cause by going 2/3 with 2 RBIs.
After scoring 3 in the first inning, Pratt exploded for 6 runs in the second to take a commanding 9-0 lead after 2 frames. Dakota Jones plated a pair with a hit and Pixler’s double also drove in 2 for the big blows in the big second inning. Bailey Gillig and Hill also picked up ribbies in the decisive 2nd inning.
The rest of the game 1 was just playing out the string and the Frogs took game one 10-2.
The second game was more of a slugfest, with Dakota Jones toeing the slab for her first time pitching in 6 or 7 years. “Dakota did a nice job in the circle. We needed her and she really came through for us.”
The Greenbacks found themselves down 10-6 after the first three innings, but battled back. Jones only allowed Hays 2 runs over the final 4 innings and gave her team a chance to get back in the game.
Pratt entered the bottom of the 7th trailing 12-9. Lauren Rambat singled with one out. After a flyout put the Frogs down to their last out, Savanah Buntemeyer singled Rambat to 3rd. Jones, Pixler and Gillig rapped back-to-back-to-back RBI singles to get the game tied. Taylar Fuhr then hit a groundball to 3rd but when the force-out throw to second base sailed wide, Pixler was able to scamper across the plate with the winning run. Game 13-12 Pratt in a walk-off.
“I’m very proud of these girls,” Forshee commented. “There was a lot of heart, desire and determination shown by the Lady Greenbacks throughout this game.  Offensively, when we got behind, the girls kept their cool and continued to produce at the plate. We made some big defensive plays that allowed us to hang around, keep it close and get it done in the 7th —which is what good teams do.”
    Top hitters were Jones   4/5, 2B, 4 Runs, 3 RBIs; Buntemeyer  3/5, 3 Runs; Gillig 3/5, 2B, BB, 1 Run, 5 RBIs; Fuhr 2-4, 2 RBIs; Rambat 2-3, 2 BB,1 Run.
