  • It wasn’t one of those days that the Pratt High School baseball team will look  upon with fond memories as they were throttled in the season opening doubleheader by visiting Hays 11-0 and 15-4.
In the opener, Pratt only managed one hit—a 3rd inning single from Brett Forshee. In no inning did the Greenbacks bat more than 4 hitters as the Indian pitcher Hutchinson was in complete control of the game.
Meanwhile, the Indians were running around the bases in the early going, the first 3 batters in the Hays line-up each scored in both the 1st and 2nd innings. Hays had a 7-0 lead after two frames. When they plated 4 more in the 5th stanza and Pratt was unable to answer, it gave the Indians the 11-0 run-rule victory.
PHS got a little bit of offense going in the nightcap. Garret Smith led the game off with a single and eventually came around to score. In the third, Mitchell Baird worked a walk and Shane McEachern was HBP. Garret Smith picked up a ribbie with a double and then Drake Evert followed with a 2-RBI gapper to right-center two-bagger.
That was it for Pratt, though, as 9 of their final 10 batters in the game made outs.
Meanwhile, Hays was scoring in every inning, plating 4, 3,1,1 and 6 runs. The final ended up 15-4, again a 5 inning abbreviated affair.
PHS head coach Pat Stivers said, “Hays is very good and we were rusty.  You could tell our pitchers weren’t used to throwing off the mound and our hitters hadn’t faced live pitching.”  PHS travels to Smoky Valley next Friday.
