Once again it's time for Pratt High School's annual scholarship banquet. At 6:30 p.m. on Monday, April 29th, students who have earned strong GPAs will be honored at the Municipal Building, and family and community are invited to attend.
This year's theme will be "Lifelong Learners."
The speaker will be Nicholas Krehbiel, who graduated from PHS in 1997. Moving to Pratt in the spring of 1987, Krehbiel participated in football, golf, scholar's bowl, band, and choir. He graduated from Fort Hays State University in 2002 with a B.A. in history and a minor in secondary education. He remained in Hays to earn an M.A. in history, graduating in 2004.
In 2009 he received his Ph.D. in American history and American religious history. From 2009-2012 he taught courses for KSU, FHSU, Washburn University, and Bethel College.
He has published encyclopedia articles, book reviews, and journal articles, along with serving as a content reviewer and author of introductory material for the website, www.civilianpublicservice.org, a site which serves as a database and chronicle of the alternative service program for conscientious objectors during World War II.
He also published the book, "General Lewis B. Hershey and Conscientious Objection during World War II," from the University of Missouri Press.
This book analyzed the role played by General Hershey, the director of Selective Service, in providing a means of alternative service for conscientious objectors during World War II.
In 2012, Krehbiel shifted careers from education to risk management as a safety director for Ag Services, LLC, a subsidiary of KFSA, one of the largest insurance agencies in the state of Kansas. He now travels to area agribusinesses assisting in the implementation and administration of their safety and compliance programs. He currently lives in Hutchinson with his wife, Catherina, and two children, Duncan (3) and Bailey (1).
