  • Avery Neumann, former Greenback softball player and now shortstop for Neosho County, was scheduled to have surgery Thursday to repair extensive damage to her leg which resulted from a collision with a Pratt Community College baserunner last Saturday.
Reportedly, she suffered a broken tibia, a broken fibula and other fractures of the ankle. They plan to use plates and screws on both sides of her ankle, according to Neumann’s mother Patti Neumann. If swelling was still too severe on Thursday, surgery was to be postponed until sometime next week.
Neumann is but the latest casualty in a series of mishaps that has decimated the Neosho softball team this spring. The squad was plagued by strep recently, and also has two players out with mono. Following Neumann’s mishap, Neosho had to forfeit the game to PCC because they were out of available players.
Patti Neumann reported that when the competitive Avery called to inform her of the accident, she said, “Mom, I got her out- I didn’t drop the ball. Lauren (a teammate) had to take the ball from me when I was on the ground after I got t-boned, but I got the out.”
“Avery is in a tremendous amount of pain,” Mrs. Neumann continued, “and we ask that everybody please send lots of prayers her way.”
